Supply and demand

A heatwave hits Lahore. Predict the new price of air coolers.

Try it

Takes about 1 minute.

The problem

Students memorise the diagram but can't predict what happens when something changes.

Who it's for

First-year economics, business schools and A level economics

Before and after

See how we make a difference

Before

As it usually is

  • A static textbook diagram.
  • A worked example to read.
After

Redesigned

  1. Change 1: A model students move themselves, with prices in rupees.
  2. Change 2: The old result stays in grey for comparison.
  3. Change 3: A prediction before the answer.
  1. Reason for change 1: Moving the curve builds the idea, not just the picture.
  2. Reason for change 2: Before and after sit side by side, so the change is easy to see.
  3. Reason for change 3: Guessing first makes the answer stick.
In person

Using this in a workshop

In class, students predict the new price on paper first, then move the model and compare. Afterwards, the link becomes homework: try a second shock, such as a rise in the price of copper.

How we run workshops

How we'd build this for you

A model learners move themselves

This activity is one example of a pattern that works in almost any subject. Here's how the same idea could look in yours.

  • FinanceMove the interest rate and watch monthly loan repayments change.
  • Public healthChange vaccination rates and see how far an outbreak spreads.
  • AgricultureChange the rainfall and watch the wheat harvest respond.
  • BusinessChange the price of a product and see the effect on sales and profit.
  • Supply chainsDelay a shipment at the port and watch stock levels run down.

We build it with your subject experts and your own examples, for your workshops and your learning platform. Every piece works on phones, by keyboard and with screen readers.
